Goethe-Institut: Bringing Eastern Market Back
Sounds, Pictures, and Historic Preservation
We can’t bring back 135 years of wonderful smells that had collected in pre-fire Eastern Market, but we can bring back some of the sounds—and with them, some of the life of Eastern Market. Perhaps we can use the sounds of the old market as a guide to the re-building of this lively public space, built in 1872-73 by German-born architect Adolf Cluss (1825-1905).
Thursday, September 6, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – No charge. RSVP to 202-289-1200 ext. 163
The Goethe-Institut hosts a panel discussion about the role played by historic preservationists in the restoration of Eastern Market. We will see archival photos and listen to audio recorded at Eastern Market for the Adolf Cluss project, along with sounds from the public market in the architect’s German hometown, Heilbronn.
Panelists: Tanya Beauchamp, Historian and Historic Preservationist, specialist on Cluss buildings; Baird Smith, AIA, FAPT, Quinn Evans Architects, overseeing the restoration of Eastern Market; Alex van Oss, Audio producer; Monte Edwards, Eastern Market Advisory Committee; Joseph Browne, director, Adolf Cluss Exhibition Project; Bill Gilcher, moderator
